Whistler

Whistler???? Mari has recently learned to whistle and feels it necessary to practice every second of every day. Well, maybe it's an involuntary thing. Either way, she is whistling all the time and has gotten quite good.

Just last week she had a friend over. They were busy playing with the American Girl dolls and I happened to peak in on them. Rather than talk and giggle together, there was Mari, whistling away. The friend, thank goodness, wasn't disturbed by the sound and didn't appear sad that Mari wasn't engaged in conversation. She may have even been entertained!! Wow!

I have often found it amazing what our kids are capable of doing, while listening to their school lessons. Or maybe better said, I am stunned at how much activity is occuring, while I read the school lesson AND how much the children learn while doing so. When we first began homeschooling, it seemed important and necessary for the children to sit quietly and listen. However, we very quickly learned that one of the many benefits of homeschooling, is that it can happen a whole bunch of different ways, most of which are not typical in group school settings.

Sometimes Thomas is juggling while listening, sometimes Mari is coloring and of course Irene is playing with something she isn't supposed to be. (this happens often, as her way to get my attention while the rest of us are up at the tall stools "schooling") Anyway, when asked about the passage just read, the children easily respond with correct answers. Let them wiggle, let them hum, let them whistle. It won't bother me - or will it?? :-)

This week we are studying about the Pilgrims and their passage to the New World, the Mayflower, more about stars, starting a four week study of America - the song. We also will start the English curriculum in Primary Language Lessons, an old textbook that covers English usage, composition, punctuation, poem memorization, oral language skills, letter writing and dictation. Spelling, art, science, reading, math and plenty of time for family read-alouds continue.

Enjoying tonights quiet moments,
Marie
